The Formulation Of My Pavilion Solar Clock
The Pavilion you are viewing is a design I fabricated from the ancient design of a sundial. As its name suggests, it can provide the time of day using the shadow provided by the object interfering with the sun’s rays. The Solar Pavilion is able to provide the time of day year round. The sundial in this project is located in the organically shaped canvas mesh which has one part that is not shaded. Therefore creating a pointer with a clock below it signaling the time of day. The seating underneath the pavilion has also been designed with the seating in mind, as the shadow rotates about the pavilion the seating is carefully placed so as to be protected from direct rays of the sun.

This pavilion elevates the ancient mechanics of a sundial into a highly calibrated spatial experience. By deliberately integrating a singular, unshaded void within the organically shaped canvas mesh, the architectural canopy acts as a precise solar pointer. This strategic perforation casts a focused, traveling beam of light that actively tracks the time of day across the ground plane, transforming structural shading into a dynamic, time-telling instrument.

Beneath the overhead mesh, the programmatic layout of the pavilion is dictated entirely by the sun's seasonal and daily trajectory. Rather than relying on a traditional, static seating grid, the benches and gathering spaces are carefully anchored in zones specifically mapped to follow the canopy's rotating shadow. This fluid spatial organization ensures that occupants remain continuously protected from direct solar gain, utilizing the structure's shifting geometry to provide passive cooling throughout the day.
